John from Adult Swim Central conducted an interview with some of the creators of Superjail at New York Comic Con in October. Check out this video of him chatting with Christy Karacas, Stephen Warbrick, Mike Carlo (animation director), Janine DiTullio (story editor), and Richard Mather (character layout artist, voice of The Twins).
Superjail’s second season is now available for purchase on DVD! The disc contains all ten episodes, plus episode commentary. The band Cheeseburger, who are best known for the Superjail theme song, are also featured on the DVD, with concert footage and an animated music video. Other special features include interviews, animatics, and more.
If you aren’t convinced to pick it up yet, maybe check out these two awesome commercials:
Kenny Powers is a character (played by Danny McBride) from HBO’s comedy series Eastbound & Down, and he is also the “MFCEO” of K-Swiss in a series of online advertisements for the sneakers. The latest ad features an animated segment produced by Superjail co-creator Christy Karacas, along with other members of the Superjail team. The cartoon is presented as a “Saturday morning commercial, specifically for the soft little minds of children”. The animated portion is 35 seconds long and starts around the 3:30 mark in the video below.
At New York Comic Con I interviewed Superjail creators Christy Karacas and Stephen Warbrick, and here is a video of that interview:
Thanks to all those who submitted questions for me to ask them; obviously I was not able to ask them all of the many questions you fans posted. Several of the questions were answered in the earlier press conference, which I’ve posted below.
Adult Swim has uploaded a video of some of the highlights of the Superjail panel at NYCC, including Titmouse animator James Sugrue performing his live dub of the episode Gay Wedding.
Unfortunately, it doesn’t seem likely that Superjail will be on Blu-Ray yet. The creators of the show are in favor of the idea, but ultimately the decision isn’t up to them. They had similar answers to questions of things like Superjail toys, video games, or crossovers with other Adult Swim cartoons: it would be cool, but unlikely to happen anytime soon.
Information about Superjail was dispensed in the form of two panels with question and answer sessions. The first was a press conference, for news outlets and websites such as this one; the second was a general panel where the creators of the show answered questions to a room full of fans. I’ve transcribed a couple excepts from these panels that you can read below.
The next Superjail episode is Gay Wedding, Sunday at midnight.
And the Sunday before that was Lord Stingray Crash Party, which is now watchable on Adult Swim Video.
Last week’s Mayhem Donor can now be watched on Adult Swim Video at
Christy Karacas’s band Cheeseburger created the Superjail theme song and their music is featured in episodes of season two. Their upcoming album Another Big Night Down the Drain will be released by Adult Swim’s Williams Street Records on May 3.
On adultswim.com/music/cheeseburger you can find an animated music video set in Superjail for their single Winner. There is also a video of Comin’ Home performed live (with a guy in a Warden costume) and previews of four other tracks.
Here’s another Superjail mural, along with an article about it.
Every month or two, artists hired by New York-based Critical Massive take a couple of days to paint a new mural. Currently, it’s sporting a purple-tuxedo-and-top-hat-wearing jail warden riding a winged centaur with pink eyes—characters from cable channel Adult Swim’s “Superjail!”, known for its surrealist, colorful imagery.
The above mural is in Boston. It is based of off the same image painted in Chicago that I’ve posted previously.
And, from Adult Swim Video, there is also this time-lapse video of a Superjail mural being painted in New York that was posted last week.
Cartoon Brew provides Christy Karacas’s description of the upcoming episode as well as a sneak peak.
“He’s kind of a super-villian dude who has his own army, kinda like Cobra… He washes up on Superjail after his base is destroyed and the warden loves him, sees him as an equal and tries to be buddies… but Stingray has other plans for Superjail. This was actually the first one we did but we didn’t air it first… Stingray appears in other episodes later in the season.”
